Record Suspension / Canadian Pardon
Move forward with confidence.
A Record Suspension, formerly known as a Canadian Pardon, allows an eligible criminal record to be kept separate from other federal criminal records.
What a Record Suspension can do
- Keep an eligible record separate in the national federal database
- Help reduce barriers in many employment and volunteer screenings
- Support education, housing and personal goals
Eligibility basics
Eligibility generally depends on the type of offence, completion of your sentence and a waiting period set by the Parole Board of Canada. We review your situation during a confidential consultation.
What we help with
- Eligibility review
- Fingerprint-based RCMP record check
- Court and local police records
- Application preparation and review
- Submission guidance
Pardon or Record Suspension?
In 2012 the term “pardon” was replaced by “Record Suspension” for most applications. The goal is similar: keeping an eligible record separate from other federal criminal records.
Already have a pardon?
Pardons granted earlier generally remain in effect. If you have questions about an older pardon, travel or background checks, we can review your situation.
Important to know
The Parole Board of Canada makes all decisions. A Record Suspension does not guarantee employment, housing or any background check result, and does not automatically grant U.S. entry.
